Our History

Tommie's Auto & Diesel was initially owned and operated by Tommie C. Kinard. He is truly loved and greatly missed!

In Memory of Daddy!
This One's For You, Tommie!

Tommie C. Kinard, a life long resident and a legend of Colleton County, was known for being a workaholic that loved his family, friends and animals.

In 1955 at the age of 20 Tommie, always being self-employed started his first service station in Ruffin, S.C., and from this point on he expanded into business areas that either involved servicing vehicles and "big rigs", or "big rigs" that needed servicing. These areas included: owning one of the largest S.C. logging companies named Buckhead Logging Company, and Tommie's Truck Stop that opened in 1969 and was located where Tommie's Auto and Diesel is today on Highway 15 in Walterboro, S.C. When the construction of I-95 started, Tommie started construction, built and moved Tommie's Truck Stop to Exit 68 on Highway 61 in Canadys. The new location not only included a truck stop, but also offered a gas station, parts store, towing service, and a repair shop for automotive and diesel vehicles. His entire family helped out, working many long hours, to keep the business running 24 hours a day.

In the early 1980's, Tommie began having health problems and decided to sell the truck stop, but continued running the repair and towing business himself until 1989.

Tommie decided to relocate the repair and towing business back to its original location on Highway 15, Walterboro, and also started the Walterboro Recycling business at the same location. After a few years, Tommie was diagnosed with leukemia, and turned all business matters over to his daughter Brenda. Brenda worked by Tommie's side for over 20 years, and his son Tony joined the business to continue his profession in Auto and Diesel repair.

During the year 1999, Brenda started back up the full-service towing company and named it after her father to carry on the name of Tommie's Auto and Diesel. The last towing truck that Tommie helped pick out for the company, before being hospitalized in March of 2000, was the Heavy Duty Kenworth. This towing truck continues today with towing services, as well as, recovery services on a daily basis in Tommie's name.

Tommie C. Kinard lost his battle with leukemia in August of 2000. He loved to see his children working in the business and being successful. Tommie's motto was to treat everyone like family - employees as well as clients.
